City taken to task over proposal

POTENTIAL traffic congestion from a new seven-storey block at the Taskers development near the Stirling Highway and McCabe Street intersection has Mosman Park Mayor Ron Norris concerned.

Garry Dempsey Developments has submitted a proposal for the development with two levels of underground parking, east of an established nine-storey building on a narrow corner of McCabe Street.

The site is part of a larger special development zone for apartments, including the One Steel and Matilda Bay Brewery sites controlled by the City of Fremantle.

Their impact on traffic on McCabe Street, a main route into Mosman Park, and a claimed lack of consultation by Fremantle has annoyed councillors.

Mr Norris said his council had not been told what action, if any, would be taken to improve the nearby intersection.

“If drivers can’t get out of McCabe Street at Stirling Highway they will head east into Mosman Park, and that will only increase the number of vehicles trying to squeeze into a residential street,” Mr Norris said.

“A major concern will relate to vehicle access and egress from Taskers, because the development shares a driveway with the completed adjoining block, which has poor sightlines and has already been the subject of much critical comment,” North Fremantle Residents Association convenor Gerard MacGill said.

The application to the City of Fremantle said the site was “fairly reasonably located” for buses and the North Fremantle train station and plans included a power station for electric cars and cyclists’ facilities.

Taskers project manager Nicole Rodrigues said congestion would be negligible after it had been documented in a traffic assessment, but widening the McCabe Street and Stirling Highway intersection and changing the timing of its traffic lights would reduce traffic.

“As for the safety concerns of the driveway, the driveway is a roadway known as Tasker Place and due to low traffic volumes this is not envisaged to be a safety concern,” she said.
