Chance to sail with Sanders

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News - By JON BASSETT

DIGITAL adventurers can sail with veteran yachtsman Jon Sanders (76), with an internet blog on his 10th and potentially final circumnavigation of the world, starting in October.

“We’ll be doing a blog daily, but it could be a bit sporadic,” Sanders said.

He is best known for the triple solocircumnavigation of the world in his yacht Parry Endeavour between 1985 and 1988.

Curtin University recently re-created the 131,535km voyage in a digital log called Triple Solo Sailor.

Sanders’ latest voyage, supported by Royal Perth Yacht Club, is touted as his last in a lifetime of long-distance sailing that has included seven Sydney to Hobarts, 14 Indian Ocean crossings and 12 across the Pacific.

He said this circumnavigation would take an “easier route” that would use trade winds near the equator and avoid cold and stormy latitudes in the South Atlantic and Antarctic, which he first sailed in a double-circumnavigation 34 years ago.

“You actually see more whales now, but with the routes I will take I won't see more pollution,” he said.

Yachting clothing has improved and he will have better communications and equipment than before, but his home comforts will still be limited on long legs of the voyage on his 45year-old 39ft Perie Banou II.

“It’ll be pretty standard, with a lot of canned and packet food, but what’s better than Nescafe 43 and Moccona made with hot, skimmed milk?” he said, when asked if a fresh coffee grinder would be aboard this time.

The voyage’s first leg with a crew will take him to Carnarvon during the Fremantle to Geraldton Yacht Race commemorating the 400th anniversary of Dutch landings in WA.

Sanders will then sail solo to Cape Town, with a crew to Rio de Janeiro, before solo to the British Virgin Islands, through the Panama Canal, to Sydney and Perth.

Royal Perth Yacht Club members and marine equipment suppliers are supporting Perie Banou II’s $100,000 fit-out, including painting and refurbishing the mast and rigging.

Tickets for a July 8 fundraising dinner can be booked at 9423 5500. The Triple Solo Sailor blog is at www.triplesolo.library. curtin.edu.au.
