US style, tastes like WA
AFTER two years of staring at those southern white oak barrels lining his East Perth distillery, Jimmy McKeown can’t wait to crack one open.
“It’s been a while but it’s definitely worth the wait,” McKeown said, referring to one of the Whipper Snapper Distillery-branded, whiskey-filled casks lining the Kensington Street venue.
“I’ve had a taste and it’s so uniquely smooth for this style of whiskey,” McKeown said.
“(Fellow head distiller) Tim (Hosken) and I are both from the country and we get our grains from our mates’ farms; you just can’t beat these flavours.”
And the flavours he is referring to are of Upshot, the craft distillery’s first American-style whiskey, handcrafted in the tradition of bourbon whiskeys.
Named for its milestone in Whipper Snapper Distillery’s journey, it offers whiffs of butterscotch with delicate hints of cedar and toffee, while the palate is creamy with caramel and nutmeg tones, and finishes with clean, well-balanced, maple syrup and citrus aspects.
To celebrate its launch, McKeown will host a private first-taste session at an invite-only launch event tomorrow, including a personalised signing session for the jammy owners of the first cask release.
But don’t fret if you haven’t scored an invite – the first cask collector’s edition whiskey is available exclusively through the East Perth headquarters for $880 a pop.
Second-cask releases are also available for a more wallet-friendly $98 from launch day from the distillery doors.
In true Whipper Snapper style, the design of the bottle is evocative of its urban environment and plays on the surrounding cityscape, with fleeting imagery of street art and posters.
“We don’t take ourselves too seriously here,” McKeown said.
“We’re in the business of creating the most authentic craft spirits and that’s what we have achieved with Upshot. There’s something very uniquely West Australian about Upshot and you can taste our State in every sip.”
