Kim throws in a swing for Rio

OLYMPIC javelin thrown and Scarborough resident Kim Mickle can often be found on a golf course on her one day off a week.

The 31-year-old, who in April secured her spot in Australia’s Olympic team heading to Rio de Janeiro, said she started “mucking around” playing golf a few years ago with friends.

The first ball Mickle hit at the Wembley Golf Course Swing Driving Range during the photo shoot with the Stirling Times hooked right, but the second was straight down the middle… and far.

“You hit 99 shots that are terrible and then one good one and that makes you come back so I got the bug straight away,” the WA Institute of Sport athlete said.

“I got really in to it last year before I did my shoulder and I’m just starting to get back in to it now.

“It’s social for me… it’s not like it’s my Olympic games so I don’t take it so serious.”

Mickle, who made her Olympic debut in London four years ago, suffered a serious shoulder injury and had a reconstruction nine months ago.

“It’s a 12-month rehabilitation program and Rio is 11 months in so we are down a month but I’m way ahead of where people are usually with it so it’s just a matter of time,” she said.

While Mickle is confident she will be fit for Rio, she said she would not compete if she was not 100 per cent fit.

“I won’t compete if I don’t feel like I’m going to be up there with the big girls,” she said.

“I’m not there to make up numbers, I’m there to get a medal.”

But Mickle says she is in the best shape of her career.

“The shoulder’s going to take time so I’m working on every other aspect of my training,” she said.

“I’m in the gym, I’m on track with everything I’m doing to make sure I’m ahead of every other girl in women’s javelin.

“I’m in bed at 8.30pm on a Saturday night but I love waking up in the morning and going to training.

“The life of Kim is eat, sleep and train.”
