Subi free parking trial gets the nod

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News - By LISA THOMAS

CITY of Subiaco council has approved a plan to try three-hour free parking in the Subiaco CBD.

Councillors voted to support the proposal 7-3 at last month’s council meeting , which would see a 12-month trial of free parking for a three-hour period at car station 13 on Rowland Street.

Chief executive Don Burnett said the plan would help to compete with other cities which offered three-hour parking.

“We received a lot of feedback about the three-hour free parking at Claremont Quarter and other localities, so this is an opportunity to trial the same timeframe in Subiaco and see if it will bring more people into the area,” he said.

“Three-hour free parking is one of the ways we are trying to encourage more shopping and dining in Subiaco.

“The City will undertake an economic impact assessment to ascertain the economic benefit of three-hour free parking when compared to the current parking arrangements.”

The trial will December 1.

Mr Burnett said he believed it was a myth that Subiaco had no parking.

“The City offers a variety of parking options in Subiaco including first hour free in four town centre carparks,” he said.

“Longer term parking is generally located further away from the town centre. Rowland Street is considered a ‘shopper car park’, which makes it ideal for the trial.” start from
