Stu­dents get taste of po­lit­i­cal life at youth fo­rum

BUD­DING stu­dent politi­cians took part in a week-long Youth Par­lia­ment fo­rum at Par­lia­ment House last month.

Shen­ton Col­lege stu­dent Ruby Guil­foyle and UWA stu­dents Alex Pan­nell, Chelsea Fran­cis, Eim­ile Humphreys, Is­abelle Sieg­wart and Am­ber Withers were among 51 high school and univer­sity stu­dents who took part in the pro­gram.

The pro­gram pro­vided an op­por­tu­nity for par­tic­i­pants to play the role of an MP and par­tic­i­pate in de­bates.

Ruby said stu­dents could ex­press their feel­ings and their views on com­mu­nity is­sues at the fo­rum.

Po­lit­i­cal science stu­dent Alex Pan­nell said it was his sec­ond Youth Par­lia­ment event.

“It is great to see ev­ery­one im­prove their pub­lic speak­ing and also the en­gage­ment of ideas,” he said.

“It breaks down po­lit­i­cal bar­ri­ers that of­ten in so­ci­ety…peo­ple of­ten do not nec­es­sar­ily in­ter­act with peo­ple from op­po­site sides of politics.”

Ms Fran­cis said she was pas­sion­ate about ad­vo­cacy and the fo­rum served as a plat­form for youth af­fairs.
