Students get taste of political life at youth forum
BUDDING student politicians took part in a week-long Youth Parliament forum at Parliament House last month.
Shenton College student Ruby Guilfoyle and UWA students Alex Pannell, Chelsea Francis, Eimile Humphreys, Isabelle Siegwart and Amber Withers were among 51 high school and university students who took part in the program.
The program provided an opportunity for participants to play the role of an MP and participate in debates.
Ruby said students could express their feelings and their views on community issues at the forum.
Political science student Alex Pannell said it was his second Youth Parliament event.
“It is great to see everyone improve their public speaking and also the engagement of ideas,” he said.
“It breaks down political barriers that often in society…people often do not necessarily interact with people from opposite sides of politics.”
Ms Francis said she was passionate about advocacy and the forum served as a platform for youth affairs.
