Bee star Beau’s ‘weird’TV ride

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Health - Tyler Brown

AS one of the top 14 spellers in the country, Beau Scaddan says he does not practise as much as people would think.

“It’s just a bonus that comes with reading a lot,” he said.

The Year 7 student said he would read “four to five hours a day all up” and was most interested in epic fantasies, which could include the likes of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and nonfiction history books.

He said he first realised he was good at spelling when he started winning school competitions in about Year 3.

Since then, he has been named top boy for his year group in the school’s spelling bee in 2014 (Year 5) and 2015 (Year 6). But now his craft has taken him to a new level, making it to the top 14 of The Great Australian Spelling Bee.

The 12-year-old joined the show’s cohost Grant Denyer for a visit to Community Newspaper Group’s Perth office on Thursday to talk about the experience.

“It was mostly just a fun ride, that’s how I would put it,” he said.

“I liked to see behind the scenes and what it was like to make a TV show.

“It was really interesting to be filming; it was like a behind-thescenes movie.

“It was a really good experience.”

He said now seeing himself on television was “really weird”.

“It’s like there’s two of me; one of them is a TV person and one of them is just a normal person,” he said.

He even watched the season premiere, which aired on July 17, twice.

“I invited the loudest friend I have over so he would annoy my sisters and get rid of them,” he said.

Though Beau is unsure if he has a future in television, he does have high aspirations for when he leaves school.

“I would like to be a neurosurgeon because I want to be a doctor and specialise,” he said.

“I’m interested in how the brain works; I find it really interesting and I read this thing about the brain and how we don’t know very much about it. I find it really intriguing.”

The Great Australian Spelling Bee is on Channel 10 at 6.30pm on Sundays.
