SOPRANO Lukas Steinwandel is “walking in the air” after wowing judges at a recent audition.

The teenager is one of two boys selected to play Oliver on alternate nights, in a seven-performance production of the Charles Dickens classic.

More than 40 aspiring actors auditioned for the coveted role.

The achievement follows his selection last year to sing the famous song Walking in the Air from The Snowman, at the Perth Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Concert.

Coached by acclaimed opera singer Penny Reynolds, Steinwandel secured a place at the specialist arts school John Curtin College of the Arts, in Fremantle.

His mother Anke said Lukas was always singing as a young child but when he reached the age of seven, someone noticed his talent.

“As parents, you don’t see your child as others do and we were encouraged to give him singing lessons,” she said. “He started violin lessons when he was three years old; his heart has always been in music.”

Weekend and twice-weekly rehearsals for the ICW production of Oliver began two months ago at The Stage Door Theatre School in Subiaco.

Lukas said he was excited to be learning to act and sing on stage.

He most recently performed at the Perth Concert Hall in Opus 2016.

Oliver will run at the Joy Shepherd Performing Arts Centre, in St Hilda’s Anglican School, Mosman Park from August 20 to 27. Evening shows start at 7pm.
