Big catch for pastry chef
THERE is nothing fishy about chef de partie Cherise Davids’ passion for cooking.
The 23 year old, who runs the fish section of Royal on the Waterfront, out-cooked the competition and struck gold at the Golden Chef's Hat Awards in July.
No stranger to the world of competitive cooking, Davids already has an apprentice of the year award under her belt and this year marked the sixth time she entered the Golden Chef's Hat competition.
“This is the third time I have won something at the state level,” she said. “The other times I got second or third place. “I keep entering because I enjoy the competition; it is fun, you get to use different ingredients.”
Despite being in charge of seafood at the restaurant for several years, Davids admitted she was not a fan of marine life. “I hate seafood,” she said. But her love for the restaurant and her colleagues outweighed her displeasure for seafood.
“Some people have come and gone; about two or three people have remained from when I started here,” she said. “It is a great crew.”
She said the team worked closely together in what could be in high pressure situations and long hours.
Davids listed being a pastry chef as a future career goal.“I am qualified, I finished my course last year; I love baking,” she said.
Co-Op Dining’s Mark Johnson also scored gold in the competition.
Maverick Cuthbert at The Reveley and Alexis Watson from C Restaurant each received silver.
Davids’ win secured her a trip to Melbourne in September to represent WA in the national final of the award.
This year’s national winning team will be awarded a trip to North America.
