Health laws updated

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Health -

PERTH’s hospitals will now be covered by a new piece of legislation for the first time in 105 years.

The Public Health Act 2016 has come into effect, largely replacing the Health Act of 1911.

Health Minister John Day said the Act would provide “a proactive, flexible, risk-based framework that would benefit the health and wellbeing of the community”.

“Passage of this legislation is a significant achievement of the Government," Mr Day said.

The western suburbs of Perth include many of WA’s major hospitals: St John of God Subiaco Hospital, Hollywood Private Hospital, QEII Medical Centre and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The new Perth Children’s Hospital is also in Nedlands.

Mr Day said the need to reform public health legislation in WA had been widely acknowledged for many years and the new Act would help to better protect and promote public health, as well as preventing illness and injury.
