Puppies inundate dog refuge home

THERE is a lot of activity happening at the Shenton Park Dogs’ Refuge Home.

While the site has become over run by cranes and workers installing the new buildings, staff found themselves inundated with an unusually high number of energetic puppies.

General manager Judy Flanagan said circumstances resulted in the refuge having more than 50 puppies at once.

She said two litters were a result of two pregnant dogs being dropped off and the rest were taken in from around WA and interstate.

“We have 12 come from one lady and nine or so came down from Broome and Darwin,” she said.

“We do a lot of work with our regional counterparts and helping them out. Generally we would only receive a litter or two every few months.”

She said all the kennels were still operational throughout the onsite works last week, which included traffic management, crane set up and building construction.

Ms Flanagan reminded pet owners to sterilise their animals.

“The biggest issue we have is the continual breeding of dogs that aren’t sterilised and it just results in more unwanted dogs,” she said.

The puppies will be available for adoption throughout the next five weeks. For more information, call 9381 8166 or go to www.dogs home.org.au.
