PLC floods eco competition

PRESBYTERIAN Ladies’ College (PLC) swept the top three spots in the UNEP-DHI Eco Challenge, beating about 140 other teams.

Three students from PLC received first, second and third place in the national competition run by Curtin University, which is an authentic learning experience for students in years 7 to 12.

The online strategic game Aqua Republica involved students working in teams to come up with practical solutions to real- life issues relating to water management and sustainable development using their knowledge of the sciences.

PLC geography teacher Wieneke Maris, who helped prepare for the challenge, said the win was a first for the school.

“We did the eco challenge last year only with a select group of students; nobody won,” she said.

“We spent two lessons in class to get familiar with the game before the students participated in the competition.

“Students reflected after playing the game that it was very difficult to balance the different uses of water sustainably, especially as the natural hazards caused by climate change, such as drought and flooding, made management more difficult.”
