Shared path for tertiary campus

Western Suburbs Weekly - - News -

A SHARED path will be constructed on Princess Road between Goldsworthy and Bay roads in Claremont to help resolve pedestrian safety created by hundreds of international students crossing in the area.

The Town of Claremont approved the $49,936 shared path, mainly for students who access the UWA Claremont campus and Taylors College in Claremont.

Councillor Jill Goetze said the path was “definitely needed” as there were many times she had to stop on Princess Road when mobs of students crossed.

She said the international students – 600 to 900 people – often looked the wrong way when they crossed.

According to a Town report, the students arrive from either the bus stops on Stirling Highway or Claremont train station in groups and have been seen not watching for cars and walking along the south side of the traffic lane on Princess Road.

The UWA campus will start a road safety awareness program and consider improved signage.
