Fun times for all the family
SINGAPORE THROUGH THE EYES OF A TEENAGER: CAITLIN SCHMITT (14) SHARES HER EXPERIENCES AFTER A FAMILY HOLIDAY.
SINGAPORE is a great place for families to visit.
From the fun and adventure at Sentosa, the amazing animals at the Night Safari and the magical Gardens by the Bay, there are plenty of things for children to experience and enjoy.
It is good to visit a country that has different traditions to Australia. Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, including Chinese, Peranakan, Indian and Malay.
While Singapore is very multicultural, most people speak English. Everyone we met was polite and friendly.
As for the food, we really enjoyed it. While you could try traditional Singapore food, there were also meals similar to those in Australia.
We stayed on level 16 of the Novotel in Clarke Quay. The lights of the city were pretty from our room and there was Starbucks next door.
A cable car ride to Sentosa is a must-do when visiting Singapore. The ride leaves from Mt Faber, also known as the Mountain of Happiness. The view was extraordinary.
On Sentosa we had a blast at MegaZip Adventure Park – an amusement park for those who like fun and facing your fears. There were heaps of rope obstacle courses, the leap of faith (a 15m parajump) and a climbing wall.
To leave the park we went on a racing zip line. At 75m high, 450m long and reaching speeds of 60km/h, MegaZip is fast and refreshing.
A Singapore holiday should also include a visit to Gardens by the Bay. The gardens are set over 101ha and feature tall Supertrees. The Garden Rhapsody – Garden Waltz light show involved the Supertrees being lit up and set to music.
Chinatown is a good place to go to experience the culture and traditions. We went to the Chinatown Heritage Centre and saw how families with up to eight people used to live in one tiny room.
A highlight of our Singapore holiday was a bike ride with Let’s Go Singapore. We rode 14km through parks, past luxury shopping malls and the Singapore Sports Hub, where Taylor Swift performed last year. We even cycled on the Singapore Grand Prix Formula 1 track. It was a great way to sightsee while having fun with the family.
There are a lot of activities at East Coast Park. Cyclists and roller bladers ride along the 15km stretch of beach, taking in the passing scenery of playgrounds, restaurants and cafes.
For animal lovers like us, Wildlife Reserves Singapore runs Jurong Bird Park, the Night Safari, River Safari and Singapore Zoo. We went on the Night Safari and saw many nocturnal creatures, such as lions, tigers, tapirs and deers. Singapore was the best holiday I have been on with my family. It was an experience I will never forget.

Tapirs are just some of the unusual animals to see on the Night Safari.
