Sev­ens gold in­spir­ing for young rugby star

AFTER win­ning the in­au­gu­ral un­der-14 pre­mier­ship, Ned­lands rugby player Grace McFillin says she felt in­spired by the Aus­tralian women’s rugby sev­ens win­ning gold at the Rio Olympics.

Grace plays for Ned­lands Rugby Union Foot­ball Club in Rugby WA ju­niors un­der-14 girls com­pe­ti­tion, where her team re­mained un­de­feated dur­ing the home and away sea­son.

The half­back said it felt great to play in the first ever rugby seven’s girls com­pe­ti­tion.

Grace’s father Alan said she also played for Ned­lands un­der-12 side and rep­re­sented the State on nu­mer­ous oc­ca­sions.

“In 2015, she was se­lected as an 11-year-old in un­der-12 state sides in rugby league and touch foot­ball and had been se­lected again in 2016 and will play in na­tional school sports,” he said.

She is hop­ing for sev­ens rep­re­sen­ta­tion too. Her dad said Grace capped off the sea­son with a Pres­i­dent’s Shield for Most Out­stand­ing Ju­nior Player award.
