‘Collision of love and loss’ inspires filmmaker

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Film - Julian Wright

IT is not long after Olivia (Maeve Dermody) and Marco (Flavio Parenti) meet in the film The Space Between, that they play a little game over a glass of wine.

Each one has to list three people, dead or alive, that they would love to have dinner with. It is a harmless but revealing game. When Community Newspaper Group asked cowriter and director Ruth Borgobello who she would choose, she paused.

“That’s a great question, I’ve never been asked that,” she said.

“Definitely Federico Fellini, he is my favourite director and from an interesting period; also director Michelangelo Antonioni.

“The third would be my Nonna; she died a few years ago and I have questions to ask her.

“I interviewed her for a video and there were some revelations that were mysterious.”

Promoted as the first Italian/Australian co-production, The Space Between, about two people who meet by chance just after one has experienced a personal tragedy, makes its world debut as part of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival this month.

Borgobello, from Melbourne, said the story was inspired by a time in her own life.

“I was inspired by a personal story; I first met my husband near a moment of tragedy and I found that fascinating, that collision of love and loss in the same moment,” she said.

Somewhat of a trailblazer for helming the first co-production between the two countries, Borgobello said she would do it again, despite the challenges.

“It wasn’t so much that I wanted to be the first, but I did want to do a co-production,” she said.

“It had not been done before, so people thought it must be impossible, but it isn’t.

“There were a lot of different challenges; more related to budget sizes and funding.

“Italy has a first-time feature film fund which is advantageous, but in Australia it is hard to make your first feature film.

“I would go down the path of developing another co-production.”

The Lavazza Italian Film Festival is on from September 22-October 12.
