Relocation of tower unlikely
CLAREMONT council would consider relocating iconic Northbridge Loreto tower back to the Town but say it is unlikely.
Mayor Jock Barker said it would cost up to $500,000 to move the 1937-built tower back to Claremont.
The tower was built as part of Loreto convent school in Claremont but when the school amalgamated and became John XIII College, it was dismantled and reassembled in Northbridge on the corner of Francis and William streets in 1991.
Mr Barker said the historical significance of the tower was reduced when it was moved, according to heritage groups.
“We would have to investigate the cost, cultural significance and community value of the tower beforehand,” he said.
“At that cost I would be surprised if it was recommended by the art deco society and heritage groups.”
