Fun and Games at new Empire

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

WA Olympians will open the new-look $10 million Empire Village Shopping Centre on November 5.

The City Beach centre has Games relevance, with the site housing athletes during the 1962 Empire Games. It was devastated by a fire in 2014. Two years on, the centre has been restored and features a new 24-hour IGA supermarket and a range of specialty shops, including award-winning The Groper and His Wife plus Park & Vine Restaurant, Georges Cafe, Boulevard Pizzeria, Vintage Cellars, Fat Fish Ramen, Optimus Real Estate and Acai Brothers.

The historic building, which is more than 50 years old, has also been expanded to include an alfresco and outdoor dining area.

Rio Olympians Steve Bird, Brant Garvey, Tamsin Cook and Brianna Throssell will join GPA director George Atzemis to officially open the centre as part of a special community open day from 11am to 3pm on Saturday.

The first 500 visitors will receive a free gelato and will have the chance to enjoy live acoustic music in neighbouring Beecroft Park while children meet the athletes.

Once the 1962 Games were over, the area around the centre was sold as private housing and redeveloped over time into the neighbourhoods.
