Movies for good cause

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Business -

TELETHON Community Cinemas are gearing up for another season of movie hits that will not only entertain but also benefit various charities.

The initiative has been running since 2002, after Ken Gibbons had the idea to stage a family-focused outdoor cinema in Burs-wood.

Since then another two cinemas have popped up in Murdoch and Bassendean.

Last Wednesday, it was announced that more than $800,000 had been raised from the screenings in the past financial year.

That figure took its cumulative total after 15 years of screenings to nearly $7 million.

Having always donated its profits to charities, the organisation has now partnered with Telethon.

That means in future all Community Cinemas profits will be funnelled into Telethon beneficiaries, improving the quality of life for children all over WA.

Recently the organisation handed over a cheque for $566,000 to Telethon.

New seasons are about to start at Burswood (November 24), Murdoch (November 10) and Bassendean (December 8).
