Daily News for television

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Business -

THERE are some exciting times brewing at WestTV’s East Perth headquarters, as the community station prepares to launch a nightly news show.

The channel already has a weekly current affairs program, Undercurrent, and the Daily News is seen as a natural evolution.

The brainchild of station general manager Tibor Meszaros and executive producer Russell Goodrick, the Daily News will be a half-hour package of the news of the day.

“It’s an extension of something we started with Undercurrent,” Mr Meszaros said.

“Russell wanted to do a local news program for Perth, because everything is now under eastern states control.

“Not as much remains for the local community news.

“We wanted to go back to the grassroots with the news.

“What we don’t want to do is mirror what the others are doing, because they tend to all be very similar.”

The program has been in development for about five months, and was named after the former evening newspaper circulated in Perth until 1990.

As well as its focus on local news, the program will provide a wrap-up of international news from partners Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle and Russia Today.

Mr Goodrick, a stalwart of Perth radio and television, will anchor the broadcasts.

He said the challenge of a nightly news bulletin had re-ignited his love for television.

“It’s very exciting,” he said. “I do have a passion for news.

“Walking in here to WestTV gives me that feeling again.

“Everyone is new to the game and they’re all excited about being in it.”

Mr Meszaros hopes the community focus of the bulletin will attract partners.

“We would like to engage the support of local businesses, the local people, to find sponsors for the show,” he said.

“We think they will associate with us because we’re different: we are local and we’re for the community.”
