Affordable housing talk
ABOUT 130 people from the State Government, private and non-profit sectors got together to discuss affordable housing last week.
Shelter WA hosted the breakfast with executive officer Chantal Roberts, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Housing Colin Holt, Housing Authority acting general manager for strategy and policy Julian Wright and FJM Property director Adrian Fini giving speeches.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, City of Vincent Mayor John Carey and Town of Cambridge Mayor Keri Shannon attended.
Mr Fini spoke about ways Perth could create more affordable housing.
“If we stopped building roundabouts for a year in Perth, we could solve this problem overnight,” he said.
He said the blanket planning model used in WA was constricting and Perth needed to be more open-minded and flexible when it came to density.
“We know what (land) is sacred; residents tell us all the time,” he said.
Mr Fini said local governments needed to take the opportunity now to look at their surplus land and use it for affordable housing.
He said verge space could be used to increase housing.
Mr Wright one key theme of the Housing Authority’s Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020 was stronger relationships across all sectors.
