A GROUP of Nedlands Rugby Union Football Club junior girls will mix it with the best rugby sevens players in NSW and meet their Olympic-winning idols during an exhibition trip.

April Alan, Rueben Cherrington, Grace McFillin, Kiara Jetta and Ariana Ruru-Hinaki have been selected to represent WA in the inaugural WA Emerging Female Force (EFF) rugby sevens squad.

Jetta and Ruru-Hinaki will play in the under-15s team, while Alan, Cherrington and McFillin will line up for the under-14s.

The 23-member squad will head to Sydney on February 3 to play a NSW Academy team, which is preparing for an international tournament in Las Vegas.

They will also meet the Australian Pearls sevens team, who won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Nedlands under-14s coach Alan McFillin, who coached the girls in 2016, said the players had plenty of experience in several rugby disciplines.

“I coached the majority of them for a couple of years now and they absolutely deserve to be picked in the state side,” he said.

“We have probably got the biggest representation of clubs in the state sides and they all have the potential to go a long way.

“It is going to be a really good test and it is going to give us an idea of where our girls are in the big picture.”

Ruru-Hinaki said she was excited to play for WA’s under-15s team.

“We have been playing against the other players on the team for the whole season and they are really talented,” she said.

McFillin (12) said she was looking forward to meeting the Australian Pearls team.

“My favourite Pearls player is Charlotte Caslick – I have loved watching her playing on the women’s sevens world circuit and in particular in the awesome Aussie win at the Rio Olympics,” she said.

“I am also looking forward to seeing Shanice Parker, who is a West Australian who was recently named in the Australian women’s sevens squad to play in Sydney.”

Last season, Nedlands won the 2016 premiership trophy, as well as two invitational rugby sevens competitions held during the season.
