Gym flooding forces relocation

MEMBERS of the City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club’s new gym have been forced to relocate after the facility flooded, following record rainfall a fortnight ago.

President Stephen Carrick said about 80 per cent of the floor would have to be removed because of the damage.

“We have three different floor materials in the gym, all of which were affected,” he said.

“The concrete slab has been removed and is currently being dried with dehumidifiers and extraction fans.

“A waterproof membrane will then be installed, before new floor coverings laid and the equipment moved back in.”

Mr Carrick was advised the gym would reopen around mid-march.

“At this stage, we have been told it should take about four weeks,” he said.

“It’s not ideal, but we are keeping positive and keeping moving.”

The water damage is a blow at the business end of the season for competitive members of the club, who are preparing for the Surf Life Saving WA state championships next weekend.

A temporary gym has been set up in the training rooms, as well as 45minute circuit classes utilising free weights and mobile cardio equipment.

“We’re working with our insurers,” Mr Carrick said.

“The Town of Cambridge is the owner of the building and I understand it is working at repairing the particular issues.”

Cambridge chief executive Jason Buckley said no structural issues had been identified.

“Staff attended (the) site along with a representative of the builder upon notification that water had entered the gym in the early hours of Friday, 10 February,” he said.

“Cleaning arrangements were made and remedial repairs have been initiated to the roof of the surf-lifesaving club and the Town and builder will monitor for any further ingress.

“The impact upon the surf club gym is regrettable and the builder will work with the Town to minimise any further disruption to gym members and the local community.

“Both the Town’s and club’s respective insurers have been contacted and repairs to the gym will proceed as quickly as possible.”

An official for Georgiou said the Town of Cambridge was handling the matter.
