Playing island ‘pest’

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Health -

JOHN Benedict Lomas was known as a pest on Rottnest Island.

The convict was sent to Australia from the UK twice, the second time to Rottnest Island.

“No-one seems to know why, but the Governor built him a house on the village ground,” Rottnest Volunteer Guides Association volunteer Wayne Endersbee said.

The building is known as Buckingham Palace and a vegetable garden behind it contains fig and lemon trees, which Mr Lomas grew when he lived on the island.

Mr Endersbee will play the role of Mr Lomas and other characters as part of the Ghosts, Myths and Legends one-hour walking tour on the island that will run every Tuesday night through the Easter school holidays.

The volunteer of eight years said he had only visited Rottnest twice before signing up for the volunteer training.
