Re­search has found a link be­tween phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity and aca­demic achieve­ment in chil­dren. Find­ings in­clude:

Even brief bouts of ex­er­cise ben­e­fit cog­ni­tive func­tion;

Greater vig­or­ous phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity out of school re­sults in higher test scores; Av­er­age aca­demic achieve­ment of chil­dren who re­ceived ex­tra phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion sig­nif­i­cantly higher than those who did not; Im­proved read­ing com­pre­hen­sion; Phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity leads to sig­nif­i­cant im­prove­ments in maths scores; and Cog­ni­tive ben­e­fits are long-term *Source: Cen­tre for Sport and Recre­ation Re­search, Curtin Univer­sity, March 2015
