New cat­e­gories for Gold Plate

THE Cater­ing In­sti­tute of Aus­tralia has added four new cat­e­gories to the 51st Gold Plate Awards.

Pres­i­dent Craig Joel said it was the big­gest change to the awards in his 10 years as pres­i­dent.

“To make any change you need to do it with cau­tion be­cause the awards have been go­ing for so long,” Mr Joel said.

“We have to take ad­vice from the con­sumer and these changes are con­sumer-driven.”

Ta­pas have re­placed the Small Bar award in a bid to at­tract more en­trants.

Mr Joel said en­trants wanted to be known as a small bar with great food rather than just a small bar.

There is also a new Mex­i­can cui­sine cat­e­gory.

“Mex­i­can restau­rants found it dif­fi­cult to go up against other cui­sine styles pre­vi­ously; they didn’t re­ally fit in to a cat­e­gory,” Mr Joel said.
