The Hollywood canine treatment

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Health -

WHILE the uninitiated may ask in stunned tones “who let the dogs out?”, those familiar with Hollywood Private Hospital’s Patient Experience Week will have no such befuddlement this week.

The hospital’s many volunteers offer a wide variety of services that help to ensure patients, their families and visitors have a positive hospital experience – including visits by canine companions.

The Experience Week started yesterday and includes the use of support animals, which have a proven therapeutic effect; aiding an individual’s emotional, psychological, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

Clinical Services director Karen Gullick said the visits were “very special to patients and bring a sense of joy and comfort during what can often be physically and mentally challenging times”.

Hollywood’s volunteers offer services such as complimentary massages to patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy.

Volunteers also manage the buggy service and provide a lolly trolley and book service.
