CEO hoping to hit the heights

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Health - By DENISE S. CAHILL

THE Adventurers chief executive Angela Skates will face her biggest fear this week to raise money for childhood brain cancer research.

Ms Skates will abseil 160m or 40 storeys down QVI on Thursday as part of the Urban Descent.

“I’m terrified of heights,” she said.

As the new chief executive of The Adventurers, founded by Rick and Emily Parish after their son Elliot was diagnosed with brain cancer, Ms Skates will lead the organisation into a new era.

The Adventurers now has its own WA charity licence and is registered with ASIC as The Pirate Ship Foundation.

There are plans to apply for charity licences in other states so the organisation can coordinate adventures nationally.

“Because of the transition this year, we’ll operate as per usual and in 2018 we’ll start to look at orchestrating adventures in other states. This year we’ll just make sure all our ducks are in a row,” Ms Skates said.

2017 adventures will take place in Thailand, Japan, the East Kimberley, Iceland and Russia.

“Most of our adventures are full, so we’ve had a good response,” Ms Skates said.

The Adventurers has raised more than $9.5 million since its inception.

In 2017, money raised will support research programs at the Brain Tumour Research Laboratory based at the Telethon Kids Institute.
