BINDARING Red Cross Clothing Sale volunteer Emma Thwaites, of Swanbourne, is modelling one of four outfits created by sewing teacher Sandra Bryans that will be on sale at the 54th event on May 20. Ms Bryans sourced “plain clothes” from Red Cross op shops and created eye-catching outfits. This year’s sale at the Claremont Showground will also include Op Shop, The Boutique, Designer Edit, Emporium and a Silent Auction.

SANDRA Bryans sees fashion in clothes most people would not look twice at.

The sewing teacher, who runs Sewanista Fashion Workshops, has scoured Red Cross op shops to create four outfits that will be on sale at the 54th Bindaring Red Cross Clothing Sale on May 20.

Among the pieces is a one-shoulder women’s top she created from her husband’s work shirt.

“I’ve taken fairly plain clothes and turned them into something a little bit special,” she said.

Ms Bryans worked on costumes for the movie Red Dog.

“They sent me down some vintage clothes to reproduce,” she said.

“I made exact replicas of a 1950s pair of jeans and a few shirts.”

Red Cross Bindaring Unit vice-president Caroline Arundell said while the main aim was to add to the $1.95 million the sale had raised for Red Cross, creating fashion from second hand clothes was a highlight.

“A great secondary benefit is that we take eight tonnes of donations of unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories and give them a second life,” the Mosman Park resident said.

“We are saving all of that from going into landfill.

“There’s a lot of stuff people look past because it’s just not fashionable at the moment and we thought it would be fantastic to have someone like Sandra, with her many talents, give some inspiration to people.”

This year’s Bindaring Sale includes Op Shop with prices ranging from $2 to $15, The Boutique stocking designer labels from $25 to $85, Designer Edit where prices start at $99, Emporium with vintage clothes, scarves, jewellery and accessories and a silent auction at www.bindaringclothingsale.com.au that closes at 11am.
