EXCLUSIVE architect and builder Giorgi is a step closer to opening a display shop on Bay View Terrace.

The majority of Claremont councillors voted in favour of approving Lot 508 Bay View Terrace being fitted out and used by Giorgi as a high-end display suite.

Councillor Jill Goetze, who moved the motion, said Giorgi’s plans to move into the shop had her full support.

“There is a consistent revolving door of empty businesses on Bay View Terrace,” she said. “That shop has been empty for four years.

“It is a high-end store that would work well with the other stores in the area, and would bring more foot traffic to the southern end of Bay View Terrace.”

But Cr Bruce Haynes argued it did not fit with the Town Planning Scheme.

“Is the applicant asking to use it as a shop?” he said. “If yes, approve it, but if no, which means it is not going to be used as a shop, then it does not fit the requirements.

“The way to change the Town Planning Scheme is to initiate an amendment.

“I think Cr Goetze’s comments are irrelevant.”

Cr Peter Browne supported Cr Goetze, labelling Cr Haynes as “either bureaucratic or pedantic”.

Cr Peter Edwards, who also voted against the motion, said allowing a display suite would “change the face of Claremont” and “set a precedent”.

Cr Alastair Tulloch argued there was nothing more depressing than a row of empty shops.
