Not easy being green

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Western Opinion -

ARRANGING a “walk to parliament” is not something a parent group does lightly.

However, the case to leave Perth Modern School alone is so strong, the high-rise policy so experimental and the lack of consultation so concerning our campaign group did exactly that on May 25. The community uproar has been loud and strong.

There is, however, one implication for all parents that has received minimal attention – the high-rise policy that would set a precedent saying schools no longer need ovals and green spaces.

As West Australians, are we ready to accept a 15-25 storey high-rise school where 1500 children have their sole outdoor space on a fenced rooftop?

Once this happens then other schools and future schools could lose their green spaces, and the comparison will be “you are lucky just to lose your oval, look what the kids at Education Central have”.
