A FEAR of fly­ing has not stopped celebrity chef Jack Stein, and son of food leg­end Rick Stein, from re­turn­ing to Perth for this year’s Good Food and Wine Show from July 14 -16.

Stein, who is the head­line act at this year’s event, will take part in the Good Food The­atre’s live cook­ing demon­stra­tions along with Aus­tralian chefs Manu Fei­del, Gary Me­hi­gan and Matt Mo­ran.

Hav­ing worked all over the world in­clud­ing in Syd­ney at the famed Tet­suya, Stein said he loved WA and could not wait to come back, de­spite the scary joyride on a hand-built plane that his pro­duc­tion team or­gan­ised for him.

“I don’t like fly­ing and the pro­duc­tion com­pany put me up in a hand-built plane,” he said.

“They told me in the morn­ing that this man had built it, and that he was a sci­en­tist.

“I asked if he was a plane sci­en­tist, they said no he was a ge­ol­o­gist.

“Still we took off from his lawn and had the most ma­jes­tic view of Pem­ber­ton and the sur­round­ing area – I sur­vived.”

Look­ing for­ward to catch­ing up with Wild­flower’s Jed Gerrard who he de­scribed as a tal­ent, Stein said he was look­ing for­ward to vis­it­ing his favourite drink­ing hole PICA Bar and our South­west as his get­away of choice.

“PICA bar in Perth is right out­side the ho­tel I stay in and per­fect when jet lagged,” he said.

“Yallingup, it’s the first place I surfed in WA many years ago and I like the sand dunes.

“It re­minds me of Corn­wall – ex­cept the waves are bet­ter.”

As for the most en­joy­able part of the show, Stein said he loved smelly cheeses and the oys­ter bar and said pa­trons should make sure they got the most out of their foodie ex­pe­ri­ence.

“I al­ways ask one ques­tion with ev­ery sam­ple, nor­mally they are quite strange but I think it’s im­por­tant to find out about ev­ery­thing that they of­fer you for free,” he said.

“Like if you taste some cheese, ask them if they have any pets, or what is their cheese in­spi­ra­tion – any­thing re­ally to just to show you are in­ter­ested.”
