THEN Prime Minister John Howard, Curtin MHR Julie Bishop, former Premier Geoff Gallop and Cottesloe MLA Colin Barnett were among dignitaries who congratulated this newspaper on its first international award 15 years ago.

The Westernsuburbsweekly was named Newspaper of the Year in the non-daily free category at the annual Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association awards on August 14, 2002.

The newspaper is vying for the same award this year. Winners will be announced on September 6.

In 2002, Mr Barnett commended the Westernsuburbsweekly for its commitment to quality.

“Your newspaper and its hardworking team are worthy winners of this prestigious award,” he said.

Last week, Mr Barnett said the newspaper continued to provide local residents with a blend of local news, arts, fashion and stories of people and events in our suburbs.

“The quality of photography and production is outstanding,” he said.

Westernsuburbsweekly’s Luxury Lifestyle liftout from November 2016 is a finalist in the PANPA 2017 Advertising and Marketing Awards.

Last month, photographer Andrew Ritchie won Best Sports Photo at the national Community Newspapers’ of Australia awards and deputy editor Belinda Cipriano claimed the Clubs WA media award with her story on WA women’s football trailblazer Jan Cooper.
