Daisies cups for keeps
DAISIES co-owner Same Kaye says using non-recyclable coffee cups saves 7000 paper cups going to landfill and saves customers money at his Broome Street, Cottesloe, cafe.
“It’s 50c off a cup of coffee if you bring your own, or use a Keep Cup, which we’ll wash for you too,” Mr Kaye said.
The cafe has been promoting permanent coffee cups as part of the responsiblecafes.org program for a year.
Mr Kaye said he had seen a spike in their use, particularly among young people, after recent programs on waste by a national broadcaster.
“We find a lot of regulars who also bring the Keep Cup and each day that’s about 50 coffees,” he said.
His staff also have their own ceramic Keep Cups.
Drivers looking for that morning pick-me-up are also accommodated.
“Just leave it in your car and we’ll wash it for you each day,” Mr Kaye said.
How to convince older coffee drinkers to switch is another issue.
“Generally you could say it’s about money and that you save 50c each time, which is about $170 a year and up to 365 paper coffee cups being wasted each year,” Mr Kaye said.
For those that cannot change their early-morning habits, there is still the disposable cup.
