THE latest exhibition at Japingka Gallery is Ancestors and Spirits from Indigenous artist Fiona Omeenyo.

Fiona paints colourful images of spirit figures and Ancestors against the tropical light of northern Queensland.

Her mythical and abstracted spirit figures are etched into the background layers of paint to become part of the landscape.

Many of her paintings show ancestral Creation stories of her homelands at Lockhart River.

“I define these as true stories, things that really happened before time,” Fiona said.

There is a strong theme of family and clan in the paintings, showing people carrying out everyday activities.

Titles like Festival Time and Close Family reflect the importance of tradition and family.

The exhibition can be previewed at Japingka Gallery prior to its opening on Friday, July 21.

Japingka is open daily at 47 High Street, Fremantle, and all exhibitions are online at Japingkaaboriginalart.com.
