IF a death toll of 80 people in an apartment building blaze is not enough of a wake up call, it is hard to say what is. The tragedy in the Grenfell Tower in London, a fire fuelled by flammable cladding, has prompted a state-wide audit to seek out buildings that could potentially have similar cladding and prevent another catastrophe.

It will be a long process to be sure and the authorities have a huge task ahead of them, but one building has already been identified in Leederville. This shocking revelation in our own backyard should accelerate the audit.

If there is one out there then there could be more, but who knows how many and when it could threaten lives?

The Building Commission lacks urgency. According to a spokeswoman, “the task of identifying which of the hundreds of high-rise buildings in WA have cladding attached is quite arduous and is likely to take some time”. No timeline is given or any indication that the process would be sped up.

A quicker response could prevent another tragedy. Julian Wright, Reporter
