Coming rounds set to decide finals fate
THE sense of history in the Western Derby was not lost on the players and it added to the achievement of winning against Fremantle.
Obviously the derby gets a lot of attention in this state because there is a large percentage of footy fans who support one of the two local clubs.
Given the history of Aussie Rules Football at Subiaco Oval, the significance of Sunday being the last clash between West Coast and Fremantle at the traditional home in WA was pretty special. So we really enjoyed the win.
It was great to fight it out and get the result and while it’s all about the team performance, all of the players were pleased to see skipper Shannon Hurn win the Ross Glendinning Medal.
Bunga has had a terrific season and he, with the rest of the defenders, stood up against a high volume of football going into the Fremantle forward 50.
While we know that most fans get really excited about the derbies, for us it’s simply business as usual, even though we appreciated that this match carried a little more significance than normal.
For me, it was just good to be out there on the field after straining a calf in round 10.
It has been a long, slow process in getting fit and back out in the middle and it was great to be out there competing again.
It’s not a great deal of fun sitting in the coaches’ box watching games where you have absolutely no control over what is happening out in the middle.
It was good to kick an early goal too, but it was all about the team and we’re all hoping we can build from here.
We’re in a scrap with a lot of other contenders fighting for a spot in the top eight so we hope to generate some momentum going from here.
The run home will be challenging, finishing with our last game against Adelaide in round 23.
That match should be pretty special too because that will be the last AFL match at Subiaco Oval.
Before we get to that game, we have some interesting battles ahead, starting with the clash against Collingwood at Docklands Stadium next Sunday.
That is going to be a tough match but we’ll be up for the challenge as we work towards locking down a spot in the top eight.
