THIS cute cottage on a 377sq m block may have needed a lot of work when Dr Rochelle Macdonald bought it four years ago, but she knew it had potential.

“I loved the location, that it is a freestanding house, had potential to renovate and extend and was oozing with character and charm,” she said.

The home has a simple layout with two bedrooms at the front, a central hallway leading to the open-plan dining/kitchen/living area and the third bedroom, and the bathroom/laundry at the back.

Dr Macdonald said records suggest the home was built in the 1930s and it is located on the edge of the 'historic' triangle in Subiaco.

It retains many original features including pressed tin ceilings, floorboards, ceiling roses and some lights, while a 1980s extension saw the bathroom renovated in keeping with the period charm of the home.

Dr Macdonald has renovated the front section of the home and had plans drawn up to remove the extension and extend the house, allowing it to fulfil its potential.

She is moving to Queensland for work so her dream will be unrealised, but the plans can be used by the new owners.

“I wanted to create my own piece of paradise in the suburb I wanted to live in,” she said.

“I work long hours and travel a lot, so when I'm at home I want it to be my escape.

“The house is a beautiful cottage, with so much character; it is ready for a family to make it a home.”

Dr Macdonald leaves with fond memories.

“It was great to sit on the front porch and see the world go by; there were always a lot of laughs when the footy was playing around the corner,” she said.

“One of my favourite memories was a party I held for a good friend who now lives in the UK – we had 25 people for a barbecue in the backyard – and I held lots of dinner parties, although the kitchen is currently a bit limited.”

The location will also be missed. “Subi is one of the best places I have ever lived,” Dr Macdonald said.

“I love the atmosphere, the restaurants and Saturday morning markets, the footy and other events.

“When bands played I could hear it perfectly from my backyard – it reflects off the back fence – but in the front rooms you could hardly hear a thing. ■ 3 1
