Island of adventure

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Television - Tanya Macnaughton

DESPITE literally baring all during one of last week’s challenges, Perth season two Australian Survivor contestant Locky Gilbert says he still has a few surprises up his sleeve.

“I knew at the start that if I was seen as a physical threat and a strategic threat, they would have been scared of me,” the 27-year-old adventure guide said.

“So I had to step back on the strategy and pretend to just be this big jock and when I was able to make it a bit further, then my strategic side could come out.”

At 195cm tall, Gilbert said his work as an adventure guide in Europe after a stint playing gridiron there had provided him with more than just one advantage to playing the Survivor game.

“I’m used to being outdoors, hiking and doing all kinds of crazy stuff, so that had me prepared for the physical side of it,” he said.

“But then as a guide you have to work with people and sometimes get them to do stuff they never thought they would.

“You need to really get them to trust you to do that stuff; I think that helped me with the strategic side too.”

Gilbert said he was confident and a bundle of pure excitement when first stepping foot on the beach.

“I’ve watched the show for as long as I can remember and to finally be on there was just so exciting,” he said.

“Everything I thought turned out to be tenfold better with the size of the challenges and amount of effort that goes into everything. There’s so many moving parts and it’s all just for you; it’s amazing and was one hell of a ride.”

Not one to sit around, Gilbert said he went to Bali after his time ended on Australian Survivor, which was filmed in Samoa, to begin setting up his new adventure company.

“I was in Bali and camping in treetops and on top of volcanoes, so I pretty much went straight back to island life,” he said.

“I’ll be moving over there and having a couple of different tours running, so hopefully that will be all sorted very soon.

“I’m a person that if I put my mind to something, I’m going to do everything to achieve it.”

Gilbert is one of six WA contestants out of 24 on this year’s season of Ten’s Australian Survivor, joined by Luke, Sarah, Mark, Jarrad and Ben.
