Lessons in school prep

Western Suburbs Weekly - - Front Page - By KRISTIE LIM

FROM lunchboxes to labels, Perth lifestyle blogger Sass and Spice says preparing kids for the school year is a “fun process”.

Sass and Spice, also known as Sharon Chan, has about 11,200 followers on Instagram and runs a blog based on her three daughters and her love for interior design, nature and beauty.

Ms Chan has two daughters - Lily (7) and Nyla (4) - who will be returning to and starting school later this month.

The working mum said her kids enjoyed going to Officeworks, Kmart and Smiggle for stationery.

“Kids are really into charms and accessories; even if they had accessories, they want a little chain on there and on their bags as well,” she said. “The whole dark with the lighter colour is definitely on trend, like a dark pink and a light pink matched together.”

Ms Chan said getting an age-appropriate lunchbox was important.

“The big thing is the bento boxes,” she said.

“Even Kmart has them as well where they partition it and what is good for especially a four-year-old is that she knows how to open it because she has never opened a lunch box.

“Some kids eat big sandwiches, so the bento box is for little things, so you can find a bigger one for a sandwich.

“Unicorns is a big trend for the girls and boys, I think are still into Ninja Turtles.”

She said parents just did their best in juggling work and parenting.

“I think we are quite seasoned now that Lily has gone in (school) and the second one is not as stressful because we have been through, done it before,” she said.

“Every family is different - you just have to prioritise every day as it comes and you know your children are the most important, so obviously if they are sick, you are not going to organise work.”
