LOVE, betrayal and an evening under the stars; Giselle is coming to the Quarry Amphitheatre.

The Perth City Ballet production is set to showcase a stellar line-up of Perth-based talent, with former WA Ballet principal dancer Sergey Pevnev taking to the stage as Hilarion for the first time since his retirement in 2015.

He will be dancing among several students from his own Pevnev Ballet Academy.

“It’s nice to be back on stage with my friends and students,” he said.

“It’s a very special production; one of my full-time students will be performing the lead role.”

Along with Jasmine Henry as Giselle, student Tamika Farrugia will dance the peasant pas de deux and take on the role of the vengeful Queen of the Wilis, while international guest principal dancer Ivan Tarakanov will perform the lead role of Albrecht.

Mr Pevnev has been dancing since he was 10 years old, with eight years spent training full-time at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St Petersburg.

“I always had an interest in dancing,” he said.

“I was doing gymnastics, but it was not emotional enough.

“I like the art of ballet; it’s physical, emotional and you can create amazing roles.”

Madeline Gill (16), one of Mr Pevnev’s after-school students, will take to the stage as a peasant and one of the Wilis.

“I like how ballet challenges me, and I really enjoy performing,” the Melville resident and John Curtin College of the Arts student said.

Directed by Perth City Ballet’s Diana Waldron, Giselle is showing at the Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach from January 17 to 20.
