UGLY in name only
WHEN Peta Brown says she’s an UGLY bartender, she doesn’t mean unattractive.
Peta is competing to be UGLY Bartender of the Year in Queensland, to raise the most money to fight leukaemia.
And she’s well on the way to achieving her dream of raising $2000.
“I’m impressed by how much people are getting behind me,” she said.
“I’ve been doing it for three weeks now and it’s actually going pretty good.
“(I’ve raised) roughly $1000 in three weeks.”
The UGLY Bartender of the Year competition is run by the Leukaemia Foundation.
The money raised – over a million last year in its first year – goes to providing people undergoing treatment for cancer with a home away from home for one night in the Leukaemia Foundation’s free accommodation in Brisbane.
“Whatever I raise is rolled into the Queensland fundraising,” Peta said.
“So I’ve gotta try to do better than any of the pubs or clubs that are doing it in the cities like Toowoomba or Brissie.”
That’s going to be a big ask, she says.
“I am [competitive],” she said.
“I’m going to try really hard [to win].
“If I do the best in my state my club benefits – they get something here.
“Could be a new icebox, new taps...”
Peta and the RSL are holding a big fundraiser on September 5. It’s a music trivia night featuring novelty games.
Further details will be available closer to the date.
FUNDRAISER: UGLY stands for Understanding Generous Likeable You, and Peta Brown laughs that someone really wanted the acronym UGLY.
