More power and ma­chine de­vel­op­ment meant could be made in larger quan­ti­ties ch faster – and we haven’t stopped But what have been the con­se­quences of this “cheap and quick” uc­tion? Sweat­shop work­ers make r clothes, our fur­ni­ture comes out of flat-pack box and our cars all look the same. But in the past decade in Aus­tralia, there has been a huge growth in the hand­made, the lo­cally pro­duced and the ar­ti­sanal. Is it just a hobby for cashed-up hip­sters to buy into, a re­volt against mass pro­duc­tion and tech­nol­ogy, or does the ben­e­fit lie in the prod­uct it­self? Mar­cus West­bury tries to find out.
