DOUG BATTLES DEBBIE
CYCLING, running and walking almost 2000km across the state is not something many people can lay claim to, but Doug Black is doing just that.
After hearing that cyclone Debbie was going to hit north Queensland, Black wanted to do something to help those who would be affected by the disaster.
“Once I saw that there was a cyclone coming I knew that I had to do something to help,” Black said.
“So in just a week I managed to organise a trip that would see me cycle, walk and run from the Gold Coast to Mt Isa to raise funds for the communities in need.”
Black left the coast on March 29 and has to get to Mt Isa by April 17, in time for Triple J’s One Night Stand.
He stopped over in Roma earlier this week before heading on to Mitchell.
“I’ve had a lot of community support along the way and the Roma Gun Club put me up while I was there , which was fantastic,” he said.
“And Bakearoma had me for breakfast every morning.”
Doing something like this has always been on Black’s bucket list and so he jumped at the chance to help out those affected by the cyclone.
“I hadn’t been on a bike since October last year, and I hadn’t been in training,” he said.
“But I’ve done most of the hard stuff already, like through the Lockyer Valley as it’s very humid and hilly.”
Black has a goal of raising $10,000 and all funds will go to the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach where they can be distributed to those who need it most.
“I hope everyone will get involved and support the cause,” he said.
“I’d like to thank all of the communities for their support along the way.
“It’s been a major stepping stone to further the trip.”
Black will travel through Morven, Augathella, Tambo and Barcaldine before ending up in Mt Isa.
