HORSE RACING: Augathella turned on quite a show on Monday at the Easter races for its annual meet.

More than 200 travellers from across the west packed into the racecourse pavilion for the five-race meet.

Locals from across Murweh Shire arrived early and started placing bets.

Perhaps the busiest people of the day were the canteen staff, dishing up steak burgers and serving drinks to endless lines of hungry punters and revellers from morning till late.

The final race of the day, the coveted Meatant Cup, saw a Charleville jockey known as Bubba prevail a full length ahead of Dakota Graham on Bevan Johnson’s Fab’s Cowboy.

Leslie “Bubba” Tilley, who rode Nude Secrets across the finish line, said it was good to tick the Meatant Cup off the bucket list.

“I am chasing my old man’s record, who won nearly all the cups in the bush,” Bubba said.

“I would love to get the Charleville Cup this year,” he said.

Most eyes were on the racecourse, watching bets grow or in some cases flutter away, but heads did turn to watch the fashions on the field and the generous prizes awarded to the best-dressed.

After the last horse crossed the line and night set in, racegoers grooved the night away with live music.
