Butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers back in 1955
THIS photo, taken about 1955, shows the employees at Ernie Deignan’s butcher shop at 84 Alfred St – where Heinemann’s Bakery now stands. From left: Stan Stein, Joyce Phelan and Walter Mathias. A sign of the times is the hanging rail at the back, and also the outer wrapping of newspaper around the meat, two practices that are banned today. Stan, who now lives in retirement, was a keen footballer in those days.
