VOLLEYBALL: 20 enthusiastic volleyball players from Charleville State High School descended on Toowoomba to participate in the Volleyball Queensland Intermediate Schools Cup Tournament.

This year 52 schools from across the state and more than 2000 students participated in the tournament, which is catered for students in Years 9 and 10.

Charleville SHS sent a bus-load of three teams, eager to showcase and hone their spike, dig and serving skills to teams from all over Queensland.

The three teams were the Year 9 girls’ division 3, coached by Jenna Andreatta; Year 9 boys’ division 2, coached by Barry Wastie; and Year 10 girls’ division 3, coached by Lauren Butler.

Miss Butler said they were accompanied by their number one supporter and bus driver, Josh Jensen.

Over the course of the three days, the students played many games of volleyball, went out for dinner at Sizzler and spent an evening bowling strikes at the bowling alley and arcade, as well as some quality down-time at the newly-developed Grand Central shopping centre in Toowoomba.

“All of the students represented Charleville State High School with pride as they were easily recognisable in their team shirts and hoodies, which were kindly subsidised by the school’s P&C association,” Miss Butler said.

“It was warming to hear from a member of the

Toowoomba community that the students are a respectful, friendly and well-mannered bunch as they played together at Queens Park in between games.”

Miss Butler said it was also wonderful to see the students have success on the volleyball court.

A highlight of the weekend was Miss Butler’s Year 10 girls’ team winning a bronze medal.

“Ryley, Destiny, Renee, Aaliyah, Tarlie, Nicole and Bena played some nail-biting volleyball over the course of the weekend and to come away with a medal after their first tournament is something to be extremely proud of,” Miss Butler said.

“The boys’ team improved with every game and ended the weekend with a smile on their faces,” she said.

The boys placed 10th out of 14, and while victory escaped Miss Andreatta’s year 9 girls’ team on the court, Miss Butler said their persistence and good sportsmanship was brilliant to witness.

“We look forward to watching these students grow and improve their skills and hopefully get more students at Charleville State High School to love the game of volleyball,” Miss Butler said.
