A GROUND-breaking achievement was made for the Roma Men’s Shed on Monday.

Works for the group’s new shed were made official, with Maranoa MP David Littleproud turning the first sod.

Mr Littleproud said the success of securing the new shed could be put down to the hard work and determination of the community.

“When you see the pride and determination that the group have had in making this come to fruition, that’s what it is all about,” he said.

“Governments can give money but unless you have a community and leaders in the community that are prepared to drive it, to believe in it and follow it through then it won’t happen.

“The reality is this is not any tier of government success, this is the community’s success.”

Roma’s new Men’s Shed site is located behind the Apex Roma Shed on Chrystal St.

Men’s Shed secretary Michael Reddan has been the driving force behind the campaign for a new facility.

Mr Reddan said they have been trying to secure funding for the shed for a number of years and it was wonderful to finally see it come together.

“Our past federal member, who is now a Men’s Shed member himself, Mr Bruce Scott, made representation on our behalf and we got approval for $147,000 from the Federal Government,” he said.

“All up we have $276,838 for the shed.”
