WOMEN in the Balonne shire have been honing their skills over the last few months with the QCWA hosting a series of healthy “Country Kitchen” cooking workshops.

Dubbed “just like MasterChef” by St George workshop participants, the classes run in St George, Bollon, Thallon and Dirranbandi were aimed at putting a healthy twist on CWA favourites.

Country Kitchen program co-ordinator Fiona McKenzie said the aim of the classes was to give confidence to already great cooks.

“The workshops themselves are a lot of fun, we have a food pantry and the ladies look to find healthy ingredients to swap or add into the existing recipes,” she said.

“The aim of the workshops is to give the ladies confidence because they are fantastic cooks, but it is about equipping them, and the local branches, with the skills to share their knowledge with the community.”

St George QCWA member Iris Easton said she enjoyed the workshops.

“It is great that they have come out to show us how to modify the recipes to add healthy ingredients into our cooking,” she said.

“Because it is so easy to get take away but these classes are teaching us it is easy to cook healthy foods.”
