Augathella young guns lighting up
RUGBY LEAGUE: Junior football stars from Augathella have lit up a zone carnival in Clifton last week, with three local boys starring in the zone five carnival.
Augathella Junior Rugby League Club secretary Daniel Nunn said all of the boys did the club proud.
“We didn’t end up winning any games, but our juniors went really well,” Nunn said.
“There was a couple of man of the match awards for the Augathella juniors and David Nunn finished with the award of best back of the week.
“He was also picked for the East vs West game at the end of the carnival.”
Nunn said the carnival didn’t only benefit the players that go, but the whole club once the representative players return.
“It’s a big boost for the team and for the club; all the boys come back and play better football for it.
“They try and lift the other boys with their efforts.
“Playing football against quality sides improves the boys greatly.”
Two of the boys are also in line to repeat the dose in 2018.
“Jake and Campbell are a year younger, so next year could be really big if they make it again.”
This week it was the Under-12 boys who had the chance to impress, with their carnival being held in Tenterfield.
The team had to face four of the better sides to start the week.
“First game they went down 18-10 against South Burnett and then 32-0 to Wynnum,” Nunn said
“On Tuesday they went down 16-6 against Western Downs Wild Dogs and 22-10 against Central Downs.”
The team features current Augathella junior Ned Alexander and two former juniors, Blake Johnson and Alex Creevey.
“Ned Alexander is playing really well,” Nunn said.
“This is the first year Blake Johnson isn’t with us and Alex has gone away to boarding school.”
Nunn said his club as a whole is on the up.
“The U10s are going well, they are competitive every week and have beaten every side in the competition,” he said.
“U12s, we field a side week to week with Cunnamulla and Quilpie and they are improving.”
